Listening to See in a Visual World

In a visual world, how does one relate to social media when one has to listen to see?

When a friend posted a sunset image to Facebook recently, the usual ‘oohs’ and ‘arhs’ with thumbs up comments appeared. I wanted to comment too, but I had no idea why this image had attracted so many lovely remarks.

So I posted: Rob, here is your challenge for the day, can you describe the image for me?’

He replied, ‘Challenge accepted’ and kindly painted the scene: ‘I noticed the sky changing colour, the low altitude clouds, lit by the setting sun, started out a pale orange and quickly deepened in intensity and hue from orange to blood red. The clouds were dark, only the underside of them was illuminated by the setting sun thus creating a steep colour contrast in the bottom to top depth of each cloud.

Red to dark grey to black, with striations of wispy clouds leaving mottled patterns against the visible patches of blue sky.

The trees are set dramatically in silhouette to the sky, along with the great Australian ugliness of one of our street’s power poles and its electricity lines.’

RNIB features Audio Excerpts

So now let’s turn the tables and I will show my reader how one can see through sound!

With a recent UK radio interview, the Read On Book Show with host, Red Szell, we provided the RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) with audio excerpts from my book, ‘Blindness for Beginners’

Several audio excerpts were played on air throughout April.

Those interested to hear a sneak peak into the book can enjoy the following two excerpts adapted for radio, read by narrator, Alice Hermans, accompanied by the music of Harry Williamson.

AUDIO EXCERPT: A Kaleidoscope of Sound

Brain Asks Eyes

My sight fades more and more each year. I have observed how the brain and eyes work together in a constant mission to see in this visual world

The brain prods the eyes to send more information to clarify the scene ahead as I ‘listen’ to the internal dialogue. I make wild assumptions with logical reasoning.
